Drive Medical Balanced Aire Non-Powered Convertible Mattress - DM-BA9600NP

The Balanced Aire Self Adjusting foam/air mattress from Drive and Mason Medical provides excellent patient comfort with an air-filled support surface. Providing the patient with the proper support they want and need while aiding in the prevention of pressure ulcers. The Balanced Aire's foam-filled air cells are arranged into three separate zones and are covered by two types of foam for ideal comfort.

Features
  • The 12, 5.5" tri-laminated foam filled air cells are separated into three distinct pressure zones, each zone independently self-adjusting to the patient's needs
  • The air cells are contained within a high density foam perimeter which creates a smooth transition from the side rail to the air cell
  • The foot section is sloped downward to reduce pressure in the heel zone
  • Add an alternating pressure pump and the Balanced Aire easily converts to a dynamic powered system for additional pressure redistribution
  • Meets Federal Fire Code CFR 16 part 1633
What our Experts Think
  • Non-powered air therapy design – Uses a multi-air-cell system that automatically redistributes pressure without electricity, making it dependable for continuous use and low-maintenance care environments.
  • Effective pressure redistribution support – Alternating air cells help reduce prolonged pressure on key areas, supporting skin integrity and lowering risk of pressure injuries.
  • Convertible functionality for flexible care – Can be used as a full replacement mattress or integrated into existing bed setups, offering adaptability across care settings.
  • Quiet, consistent performance – Designed to operate without pumps or motors, ensuring a silent sleep environment ideal for sensitive or long-term patients.
  • Improved comfort and immersion – Air-cell construction adapts to body contours, helping reduce shear forces and improve overall patient comfort during extended bed rest.
  • Low-maintenance, power-free solution – No electrical components means fewer points of failure, lower operating costs, and easier deployment in homecare or emergency settings.
  • Suitable for long-term care environments – Ideal for patients requiring continuous pressure management where powered systems may not be practical.

Q&A

Q: What is the Drive Medical Balanced Aire Non-Powered Convertible Mattress (BA9600-NP)?
A: A hybrid pressure redistribution mattress that combines self-adjusting air cells and foam to provide advanced comfort and pressure relief for long-term care and homecare patients.

Q: Who is this mattress best suited for?
A: Ideal for individuals at risk of pressure injuries who require a high-support therapeutic surface in hospitals, nursing homes, or home settings.

Q: How does the “non-powered convertible” design work?
A: It functions as a self-adjusting air/foam system without a pump, but can be upgraded with an optional alternating pressure pump to convert into a powered dynamic mattress.

Q: What pressure relief features does it include?
A: It uses self-adjusting air cells, a visco foam top layer, and zoned support to reduce pressure, shear, and friction while improving comfort and circulation.

Q: Does it help prevent pressure ulcers?
A: Yes. It is specifically designed to help prevent, treat, and manage pressure ulcers by redistributing pressure across key body zones.

Q: What comfort features does it offer?
A: It includes a hybrid foam top layer for immersion comfort, heel slope design for offloading pressure, and a stretch cover that reduces shear forces.

Q: Is the mattress safe and hygienic?
A: Yes. It features a fluid-resistant, vapor-permeable, antimicrobial cover that helps protect skin and maintain hygiene in clinical environments.

Q: What is the weight capacity?
A: Typically supports up to 500 lbs depending on configuration and size.

Maintenance Tips
  • Clean the cover regularly with mild soap and warm water; avoid harsh disinfectants that may damage the waterproof surface.
  • Disinfect between users with approved non-abrasive cleaning solutions, then allow full air drying before reuse.
  • Inspect the mattress surface and internal air/foam structure for punctures, leaks, or uneven support.
  • Ensure the cover zipper is fully closed during use to maintain hygiene and protect internal layers.
  • Do not fold, roll tightly, or compress the mattress for long periods, as this may damage air channels or foam integrity.
  • Rotate or reposition periodically (if applicable) to promote even wear and consistent pressure redistribution.
  • Keep the mattress on a compatible medical bed frame with a supportive, flat surface.
  • Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or high heat during drying or storage to prevent material degradation.
  • Check regularly for loss of firmness, air retention issues, or comfort changes and replace if performance declines.
  • Store in a clean, dry environment when not in use to maintain hygiene and product lifespan.
